Errors in statistics or agency data

IROPO republishes figures from the FBI. Errors fall into two groups, handled differently:

  • Processing errors, such as an agency linked to the wrong ORI, a wrong name, or a number that does not match the FBI source. We fix these in the pipeline and note the change in the project's history.
  • Source errors, where the FBI's own data is wrong or incomplete. Agencies submit their data through their state's reporting program; corrections must be made there and will appear here after the next refresh. We can annotate known problems in the meantime.
Report a correction

Include the page address, what is wrong and a link to the official source if you have one. Reports are public on GitHub, so please do not include personal information.

Our commitments

  • Every report gets a public response.
  • Confirmed processing errors are fixed in the next data release.
  • Every change to published data is recorded in version control.
  • Methods changes are documented on the sources page.

For future individual records

Disputes and removal

IROPO does not list any individuals today. Before the first record is published, the following process will be in place and staffed:

  1. Anyone named in a record, or their representative, can file a dispute through a private channel.
  2. The record is hidden from public view while the dispute is reviewed.
  3. Two reviewers who did not verify the original record check it against the official source.
  4. The outcome, and any change, is recorded in the record's history and communicated to the requester.

A record comes down when

  • The conviction was expunged, sealed, vacated or overturned
  • The listing identifies the wrong person
  • The source jurisdiction's retention period has ended
  • The official source removed or corrected the record
  • The record did not meet IROPO's publication criteria

The registry policy describes what it takes to be listed in the first place.
